I can only imagine the work involved in leaving the land desolate as the Nephites gathered to their stronghold. They must have removed fruit trees and any other edible vegetation so that neither animals not Gadiantons could subsist in their land. The plan was not simply to gather but to deprive their enemies of any provender as well.
