Perhaps the reason that the sermon on the mount was so powerful was that it distilled the sum of the Savior’s teachings into one memorable whole. That would explain why, after teaching that sermon to the Nephites along with giving instructions and authority for baptism, He would tell them that they had heard the things He taught in mortality.
Those people of any religious persuasion whose lives conform to the teachings in the sermon on the mount are His sheep and stand ready to be saved once they have received baptism if they will remain on the path.
