Attention to Detail

The task today for the 30 days to a better man was to shine my dress shoes. It’s a simple task and one that I have done enough times to be comfortable but as I shined my 10 year old dress shoes I realized that while having my shoes presentable was one objective there was another lesson to be learned and that was the value of taking time and paying attention to details.

I could complete this task without much thought and my shoes would look better for it but any boy can do that. If this is a task to increase manliness it is because it also is an opportunity to really pay attention and make my best effort. I realized that all of manliness is, to one degree or another, about gathering and using information to really perform rather than simply going through the motions of life. I tried to pay attention to what I was doing but there is only so much that polish can do for shoes that have been worn out over a decade.
