Jeremiah 28 – 29
After the prophecy of Jeremiah that the Lord had given Nebuchadnezzar to rule over many nations, about 10 years after Nebuchadnezzar had installed a vassal king in Israel and taken much of the treasure of the temple along with the son of the king and other choice people (apparently including Daniel), Hananiah prophesied that the yolk of Nebuchadnezzar would be broken within two years. He was off by about a lifetime. For making his false prophecy Hananiah was told by Jeremiah that he would die within the year, which he did.
Apparenly there was a prophet in Babylon like Hananiah who told the captives of Israel that their captivity would be short. In response Jeremiah told him that he would not live to see the peaceful return of the captives in Israel and that he would have no male posterity.
I had wondered if Daniel knew about the prophecy by Jeremiah of a seventy year captivity since that prophecy was made after Daniel was carried away. Apparently Jeremiah sent that prophecy to the captives in Babylon so that they would know. In other words, Daniel did know. He knee that he should make a life there and that he should support his new home. Jeremiah told them that they would only have peace if Babylon had peace and that if they would embrace their life there they would be increased in captivity rather than being diminished.
I just realized that the removal of people such as Daniel into Babylon was a fulfillment of the prophecy by Isaiah that the Lord would take away the leaders and skilled craftsmen from among Israel because of their insistence on forgetting the Lord. The choice ones were taken into captivity to experience peace and the rest were left to face hardship and destruction.
