1 Nephi 1 – 2
The Jews mocked Lehi in part because he testified of the coming of a Messiah. That flies in the face of the image that they have ever waited for His coming.
It sounds like Lehi was commanded to leave Jerusalem but that it may have been Nephi who first learned that they were to be brought to a land of promise.
