I suspect that a substantial portion of the Lamanite army was made up of Nephites dissenters and that those under Lehonti were more likely to be Lamanites by birth as was the king of the Lamanites at that time. After Amalickiah was done the king of the Lamanites may never again have been a true descendant of Laman.
Amalickiah choose those who were most familiar with the Nephite defences to be leaders in his army but during the for years since he had left the Nephites Moroni had rendered ask their knowledge completely obsolete.
