Alma 51
It is easy to think after the description of Moroni that he made no mistakes but I think he made two mistakes that were exposed in this chapter. First, he choose to put too much reliance on the defences of his first line of cities. That they were the most strongly defended makes sense but Amalickiah took advantage of that by attacking only one point on the front line and then running up the border cities that were fortified but less than fully staffed rather than attacking other of the front-line cities after taking the city of Moroni. Second, he choose to send his men to fight the king-men, who refused to defend their country but might not have taken arms to actively fight the Nephites, rather than keeping all his men focused on defending his front line at the time when the Lamanites came to attack. Had he put all his men against the Lamanites that front line might have held against Amalickiah. Of course I may be wrong about those mistakes but it is important for us to recognize that the Lord can use fallible men, not just perfect men, even when they make real mistakes.
