Helaman 8 – 9
The lower judges that are most angry at the words of Nephi lived ever fearful of how much the people might know of their wickedness. Their greatest fear was that the light of truth should ever be shined upon them and their activities for the public to see. The reason they wanted the people to lay hands on Nephi was that they feared confirming any suspicions that others in the crowd might have about them.
Their denunciation of Nephi and their declarations of how strong the Nephites were are incredibly ironic considering that as a former chief judge Nephi was at least add familiar with the law and the legal system as any of them (in fact that familiarity is the reason he stepped down) and if it were not for the preaching by Nephi and Lehi they would not have been in possession of half their lands even now.
