Matthew 27
The chief priests and elders had already decided they would kill Christ, they only took counsel together about how they should bring it about. They might have discussed accidents at some kind but they settled on having the Romans execute Him. It may be that the only discussion was how to present the case to ensure their desired outcome.

It sounds as if in betraying Christ Judas had expected him to be tried and/or censured but was disappointed to discover that they intended to kill Him.

Pilate expected that the people would rally to save Christ if the alternative was Barabbas. He was unwilling to stand for anything himself against the priests.

There is much irony in the fact that those reviling Him invited Christ to come down from the cross.

In vain did the priests seek to prevent the greatest prophecy of Christ which they acknowledged would make Him and His teachings even more powerful.
