It sounds as if Herod generally appreciated the teachings of John the Baptist but was weak when Herodias opposed him. Had the promise to give whatever she asked been made in private Herod might have refused but because he did it publicly he didn’t dare to refuse especially considering that she requested that it be done immediately.
Jesus popularity in His lifetime was greater than I had previously considered.
