Much of what Christ taught either made more sense to His apostles because of some cultural understandings they shared with Him out else they spent a good deal of time trying to tease out the meanings in His words.
I believe that it was the latter—they pondered on His words trying to understand them. That is why He promised to send the Holy Ghost who would teach them the meaning of these things and help them remember what He had taught when it would make more sense to them.
