Romans 5 – 6
I can understand how people reading these words of Paul might mistakenly think that because faith in Christ can bring salvation (where our own works alone never could no matter how good those works are) that good works are merely icing on the came of faith. The truth is that any claimed faith that doesn’t result in increase in righteous works is not really faith because real faith changes or nature to become more righteous and hence to act more righteously. The actions don’t save us but they serve as evidence of the process of salvation taking place in us. That it’s what Paul is trying to convey in chapter 6 here.
