2 Timothy 1 – 2
Paul is encouraging Timothy to go forth and exercise his missionary calling boldly and without fear of being associated with either Paul or Christ. Apparently there were many who feared to be associated with Paul because Paul was under Roman arrest.
Paul counsels Timothy to teach the saints to avoid disputing over the meaning of individual words (as the Jews are known for doing in rabbinical tradition) because doing so gains little and rattles the faith of less knowledgeable saints.
“The servant of the Lord must not strive (i.e. contend); but be gentle into all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose them.”
