Ecclesiastes 9
Solomon says it is vanity that all people, righteous and sinners alike, are subject to the same circumstances. They all die. They all receive rain. They all experience drought. To me this is a testament of the must’ve of God. It isn’t what we experience that defines our eternal reward but how we respond. That we all have the chance to respond to both blessings and setbacks in mortality helps to test a full range of our responses to fairly determine our merit. Also, how could we experience real opposition if our circumstances were perfectly matched to our every choice?
If we think of mortality as a race then we must conclude that those who run fastest don’t always win. If we think of it as a battle we must conclude that the strongest don’t always prevail. The problem is that life I isn’t as simple as either of those and success is measured against a different standard and with fine metrics than the way we perceive winning and losing with our mortal eyes.
It is good for us to understand that success won’t always look like winning but it isn’t a reason to doubt the purpose of mortality.
