Journaling Jumpstart—Day 10

Take a look at the hero’s journey

, and identify where you are in that journey. Doing so can help you better understand where you are in life, and help you figure out where to go next. You can take it in the context of your entire life, or you can take it in the context of a certain phase of your life. Either way, you can be sure that you’re part of a greater journey, and knowing what comes next can help guide you along.

This should be interesting.

The twelve steps of the hero’s journey are:

  1. The ordinary world
  2. The call to adventure
  3. Refusal of the call
  4. Meeting the mentor
  5. Crossing the threshold
  6. Tests, allies, and enemies
  7. Approach
  8. Central ordeal
  9. Seizing the reward
  10. Enlightenment and resurrection
  11. The road back
  12. Return with elder and master of two worlds

My first question is, what is the journey for me? It could be my career, my family, my physical condition, or my spiritual progression. Personally I’d like to focus on my spiritual progression because that is the one I value most dearly (my family is right up their but the spiritual progression encompasses more and informs my journey within the family context). The challenge is that I’m not sure I can identify clearly where I am on my spiritual hero’s journey.

My best guess would be the approach, the central ordeal, or seizing the reward. Most likely I’d settle on the central ordeal (and not just because it’s the middle of that range). Right now (for the last couple of years and in many ways climaxing last summer) we have been in the midst of an intense crucible collectively and individually. Our family has been surviving while striving to make some important changes to get onto a solid footing going forward. I feel that our approach and direction are correct but we haven’t completed the process yet. I also feel that one we do well be ready to fly.

Add I, and we, complete this central ordeal a first transformation will be completed making it possible to continue down the mature phases of the journey leading to the climax of the journey and the resolution that follows.
