I wonder if the people who separated from Laman and Lemuel called themselves the people of Nephi because Lehi had divided his counsel and blessings between those who would follow the example of Nephi and those who wouldn’t.
Nephi made the second set of plates after separating from Laman and Lemuel. The Lamanites may never have been aware that there were two record among the Nephites.
