Journaling Jumpstart—Day 14

Write a review of some form of entertainment you recently took in. Whether book or movie or TV show or Broadway play, write out what you liked and didn’t like about it. Was the acting/writing good? Could you follow the story? Is there anything you can take from it about life, or was it purely entertainment?

It’s not uncommon for me to write reviews of books I’ve recently finished, especially those that have impacted me. I don’t have a book I’d like to write about now but I’ll try a movie review four this.

I think I’ll review the new Ben Stiller version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I really liked the original with Danny Kaye. I really appreciated how this one was true to the concept while being original as well. Danny Kaye was a daydreamer who stumbled onto a real adventure with a beautiful stranger he’d just met. As fun as that was, I appreciate the fact that Ben Stiller was a dreamer who took charge of an unfortunate situation and had adventures while going the extra mile for his job and seeking to impress a woman he had seen around work (not a complete stranger he meet by chance). That aspect of real intention on the pay of the title character was very speaking to me.

Taken in isolation the new version was a good movie but when compared to the original (which I still like) it calls out an important lesson – that no matter how many things are out of our hands we still have the opportunity to act intentionally rather than passively accepting what comes our way.
