I suspect that Alma shared this prophecy with Helaman because he had seen it in a vision much like the one Nephi had seen concerning his seed.
When Alma passed the care of the church to Helaman there soon arose dissenters who wouldn’t heed Helaman. I wonder if part of the strength of the ordain women movement and the pro-gay-marriage contingent among members is a result of members who respected and followed President Hinckley but didn’t gain a testimony of The prophetic calling of President Monson.
