Moroni told Joseph Smith that he might be able to show the plates to a few who would help bring them forth. I had always assumed that many the the witnesses but I realize now that the declaration that “unto three shall they be shown by the power of God” indicates that those Joseph might show them to were separate from the three promised witnesses.
The brother of Jared knew that while a king could be good, a man who felt compelled to be king would never govern well.
