As we seek to get the family momentum built up it has become obvious that much of our lack has been in what role the children have played. We have often expected to little and even when or expectations were correct we don’t always enforce them appropriately. I wanted to see what the scriptures said about children in the family. Under Family, Children, Duties Of in the Topical Guide I got some variation of the fifth commandment a number of times along with scriptures that children should obey their parents (honor and obey overlap but aren’t simply semantic differences), that they should hear the instruction of their father’s, and that they should submit themselves to their father’s in humility and patience.
Under Family, Children, Responsibility Toward parents are taught that they should teach the commandments to their children and train them up. It also teaches that we should not withhold correction from our children although we shouldn’t provoke them to anger or despise them. We should bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We are also to prepare them to hear the word of the Lord, to provide for their maintenance, and to defend them from danger.
