I get the impression that Abraham first learned about the priesthood by studying history. In other words, there was still still enough secular knowledge concerning the origin and history of men that an interested person could come to know the fundamentals – at least enough to sell out the priesthood. With Melchizedek still alive there was still firsthand knowledge of life before the flood.
Abraham tried to persuade his family to join him in seeking the path of righteousness.
Because if his lineage, Pharaoh was denied the priesthood but he choose to set up his government to at least mimic the form of the patriarchal order.
