Gideon didn’t have a high opinion of himself. He felt like the most backward of men and among the last capable of saving Israel from the Midianites. What he had in his favor was a willingness to follow the directions of the Lord and do things that seemed hard or unusual.

When the people asked Gideon to be their king he refused. Unfortunately he did make an object out of the gold of their spoils that the people might have come to worship (“the people came a whoring” and “it became a snare” unto Gideon and his family).
