Ezra seems to have been the chief ecclesiastical or spiritual leader of the people who returned to Jerusalem at the time that Darius decreed that the temple at Jerusalem should be rebuilt. During that process Ezra found the books of the law of Moses and reads the laws to the people publicly and encouraged them to covenant to keeping the law as it was written. This marked a change in how the law was had among the people. Now all the people were likely to study the law. Previously the priests studied the law and the people were largely ignorant of anything but what the priests taught them. That is like what happened in Christianity during the reformation.
