John the Baptist

In some ways, John the Baptist was the ultimate priesthood man. His while life was defined by his mission and his while mission was dependent upon his priesthood and he boldly and successfully fulfilled his mission.

I think it is instructive that John performed no miracles. It demonstrates that miracles aren’t a proof of success or of priesthood power – especially on an individual level.

Perhaps it was because of his humility in seeking no recognition for himself that John was so wildly successful in attracting followers while avoiding the ire of the Sanhedrin. They viewed him as unassailable and mostly harmless while he forged a new foundation of faith among the people from which the Savior would establish the new covenant which completed and replaced the one they were supposed to be preserving.
