Unlike his father, Helaman seems to have grown to maturity without rebelling against the gospel. This might be because of the experiences of his father and grandfather who each had to find the true gospel for themselves after growing up without it or rejecting it in their youth. In Helaman we find a young man who he up with strong gospel examples who never married public acknowledgement for any kind of rebellion who went on to lead the church through some very trying times and did so faithfully for his while life. He was even said to be like captain Moroni whose righteousness was described in a way that any good man would wish to be known. And he served honorably under Moroni at the head of the stripling Ammonites during their protracted war.
