Among the public witnesses to the Book of Mormon were five members of the Whitmer family. Of those David Whitmer was the only one I believe who ever left the church. He was also one of the three witnesses while his father and brothers were among the 8 witnesses. I wonder what it was that set David Whitmer apart from his family members. Perhaps he was more zealous so that he was called to be one of the three witnesses because he the himself into supporting Joseph even more than the rest of the family but then let the church because of that came zeal when he found cause to disagree with Joseph and other leaders asking the saints.
Of the three witnesses David Whitmer was the only one who never rejoined the church after he left it. He did adamantly defend his testimony of the Book of Mormon when rumors swirled that he had denied it.
