Orson Hyde had an interesting history in the church. His mission to the Holy Land will forever be remembered but he was also removed from the Quorum of the Twelve and then reinstated (possibly twice). In the late 1830’s he wrote that he felt that God was no longer with the church. As I consider that time period I think that the problems of that time were caused because there were many within the church who had separated themselves from God. Some, including Orson Hyde apparently, interpreted that as God having abandoned the church. The truth was that it was still the Lord’s church even if many within the church had lost their bearings.
Despite that sentiment Orson returned to the church quickly and continued to serve throughout his life – even when he lost his place as president of the Quorum of the Twelve late in life as a result of a ruling by Brigham Young.
