David W. Pattern had a short tenure among the apostles. He was among the first called and was the second most senior member of the quorum when it was formed. He died less than two years later as the first martyr in the restored church in a battle against the Missouri mob. By then he had become president of the quorum because less than two years after the calling of the first modern apostles Thomas B. Marsh, the first president of the quorum, had been excommunicated because of his pride. In contrast, David Patten did everything that was asked of him including sacrificing his life for the cause of Zion.
