It just occurred to me that the brothers of Nephi (and presumably the sons of Ismael) all had bows as well but they could obtain no food with their weapons. If that was the case when Nephi broke his now then it was the case before he broke his bow and they had been living primarily of of what Nephi produced in their hunts yet they had the gal to complain to him when they couldn’t mooch off of him any longer.
I think the incident with the now was the point that spiritual leadership of the group transferred functionally though unofficially from Lehi to Nephi.
