Nephi says that his brothers loosed him after they began to see that they would perish if they didn’t repent. I wonder about the possibility that they weren’t thinking of repentance so much as recognizing that Nephi was the only person left who hasn’t been allowed to do whatever he might be able to do to save them and as the builder of the ship he might have an idea of how to survive the storm.
