It is no use showing miracles to this who, when they experience a miracle, insist that the miracle was a result of something other than the Being who wrought it.
The Nephites claimed it was their own strength and preparation that led them to defeat the Lamanites multiple times. After they lost when Mormon was no longer leading them they believe that it was Mormon’s leadership that brought their victories. They refused to believe it was their Heavenly Father even when Mormon told them so.
When Mormon took command again and purposes that the Nephites gather to a single place they believe he had a plan to save them. He held no hope of saving them as a people but did hope to minimize the number of lives destroyed in the process of the destruction of the nation. He gave them a few years of peace while they gathered and then a swift destruction when the battle commenced.
