I can imagine the chief priests of the Jews convinced the people to sell Barabbas because he was willing to lead a military revolt against Rome as they had expected of a Messiah. At the same time, I could see them arguing that the people would put themselves in danger of Roman retribution if they slight the release of one who was addressed as the king of the Jews.
