Before Moroni knew the problem

Moroni worked his hardest to deal with the Lamanites despite the insufficient support he was receiving. He did so without complaint and with all his faculties. When he heard of the success of Helaman he removed and applied that joy to bolster his hope and increase his efforts to gain similar success in his party of the land. At the same time he requested more help for Helaman to secure that distant victory. Then he found out that the internal problems we greater than he had known.
