Friendship with Christ comes when we can be brought completely into His confidence. In other words, when we have developed the spiritual maturity that He can tell us all that the Father has given for the children of men and we will embrace it. That seems to me to be the dividing line with our children as well. They become our friends and peers when we no longer have to operate without telling them our long-term intentions or objectives.
To become friends we must be faithful as servants and demonstrate the capacity and willingness to both comprehend and embrace thrones of His truth. Children must demonstrate their trust in following instructions and accepting the explanations they are given as well as their maturity to comprehend the things that are shared with them.
