In a kingdom that likely numbered less than 5000 people (and I suspect it was not even 3000) a group of 450 would be quite significant. It if no surprise that Noah became aware of it despite their efforts to maintain secrecy.
It seems to me that Alma must have been discontent with what he was doing and what was happening around him in Noah’s court and that the preaching and teaching he did in the place of Mormon after hearing the words of Abinadi must have been much more satisfying.
