I never connected the dots before that Amalikiah rose to prominence amidst the dissensions from the church after Helaman began establishing a regulation of the church and many rebelled at his preaching. In other words, Amalikiah was likely a member of the church who, like so many others, kicked himself out when he didn’t like the direction of the church.
Considering that so many of his followers were lower judges, it is likely that he was an officer of government at some level as well.
