The five who were sent were doubtful when they left but couldn’t dispute what they saw. Those who sent them had figured that they would finally have the proof to discredit Nephi. They thought he had gone from telling uncomfortable truths (that they didn’t want to acknowledge) to making things up that were specific enough to be proven wrong.
