Promised land and rebellious brothers

It seems that the land they had called Bountiful on the seashore may have seemed less bountiful when compared to the bounty of their promised land. 

I wonder if there was a different way to respond to Laman and Lemuel that might have led them to repent without their first binding Nephi and having to be threatened by God with destruction.
