After what seemed to me to be an ordinary day, Savannah called me on the way home from work to tell me that Isaac was threatening her with a knife. She locked him out of the house and I expected I would have to deal with that when I got home. As soon as I walked in the door Isaac called from a neighbor’s house to share his complaints about Savannah. I promised to go pick him up but first I went to my room to put my bags down. There I found Laura sitting in bed moaning. She was mostly incoherent but when I asked her what was going on I was able to understand her tell me that she had taken all her pills at 1:30 and ask me to take her to the hospital. It was 4:30 and instead of getting Isaac I was calling 911. Laura was in the emergency room until after 11 before they admitted her to the ICU to sleep off the medication while they monitored her. When I left a little bit after midnight she was sleeping soundly and aside from the pills, all her blood work had been good.
Savannah and Mariah were distraught. Alyssa didn’t show any signs of understanding what was even going on until many hours later. Isaac seemed to know what was said but not completely comprehend it, and the four youngest just thought it was cool to see the police officer, fire truck, and ambulance. I told them “Mom took too much medicine.” For now that’s all they need to know.
In the morning I’ll have to give the on-call phone to someone else so I can take care of the family.
