Mariahtook and his people were driven by ambition but also by fear. They salary claimed some of the land of Lehi (ambition) and believed that Moroni would slaughtered them when he heard (fear). This is an example of how Satan will willingly make use of any negative emotion to draw people into wickedness and poor decisions.
