Harlot

We tend to think of harlots as women who sell sex but it struck me that the word applies more broadly to anyone who will abandon their self respect to gain whatever it is they are after. In our society that includes those who will do anything to curry favor with people in power or who will subject themselves to abuse simply to gain a place in their preferred profession (most traditionally acting). Truly understood, women who sell sex are sometimes less accurately called harlots than people who never sold sex and yet suffered abuse of various sorts rather than risk their career goals. The priests of king Noah spent their time with people who were willing to do anything to gain their favor.
