Nephi steps aside

I wonder about nephi stepping aside from the judgement seat. Did he do so like his great grandfather, Alma, who selected his successor or did he have the people vote on who should take the seat and the people choose a man as wicked as their tastes desired? (We don’t have information on whether Cezoram was wicked, only on how wicked the Nephites were at that time.)
