Unstated motivations

I suspect that Mormon asked for the time to gather his people both to gain maximum strength but also to select a strategic location and though many might have been unaware he might have also been hoping against hope that they might repent and regain some standing before the Lord. On the other hand, the king of the Lamanites likely agreed because he could use the time to gather his much larger force and ensure a quicker complete victory than attacking the Nephites piecemeal.

It sounds like Mormon wrote his abridgement in the space of no more than 4 years.
