We know that Nephi didn’t anoint any of his brothers to be king (which wouldn’t have made sense anyway considering their ages) but we don’t know if the king he anointed was from his own posterity or if it was someone not among his direct descendants. I suspect that Jacob would have said if it were a son. I also suspect that Nephi would have chosen based on inspiration and aptitude over lineage.
