Highs and lows

Today was a very exciting day because Isaac was ordained a deacon. The grandparents and uncle Bill came but otherwise it was just our nuclear family.

Savannah also gave a great talk in sacrament meeting. Overall the day went very well. On the other hand, it ended on a low note as we had a call with David and Becca to set/reset expectations regarding Enoch. In theory I’m fine with that but they proved that they still have little understanding of Laura’s emotional limitations and they don’t think that we have any standing to make decisions for our family. I get that they have a stake and a say in taking care of Enoch but David thinks he should be able to call the shots unilaterally.\nEarlier this week we had a slightly tense discussion regarding finances when I pushed back against paying the full, original agreed-upon cost of Enoch’s maintenance when he is spending ¼ of his time with us. During the call tonight David made it clear that not only should we still part that full cost but he is insisting that we pay even more, despite knowing that we can\’t afford the cost of paying for Enoch to live their lifestyle, and that we fund an escrow account to pay those costs and select a third party to manage the account.

They are also demanding counseling for me and Laura individually plus counseling for us as a couple. Those things are fine in a vacuum but again, costs and the time required mean that they would do more harm than good. Additionally they demand weekly accountability meetings with us – that is, weekly we must meet with them and prove that we are running our house the way they think we should (they outlined their expectations). If we don’t meet all those conditions they will send Enoch to live with us full time on December 10th but they will continue to let him stay at their house between school and dinner time.

Personally I think having Enoch live with us by next month wouldn’t be a bad thing although it would be a significant adjustment. It would save us large sums of money.

The biggest problem is Laura is afraid of bringing Enoch home yet. She wants to bring Ezra home soon even though that would require getting him enrolled and succeeding at school which is potentially much harder than the challenge of having Enoch come home. If like to have them both home but we’ll see how this all plays out. Unfortunately, the thing I can most safely predict after the call tonight is that Laura will be thrown off in the near future because the wardens insisted on her joining the call and we will pay a price for it as a family.nuclear family. Isaac wanted it small. I felt an amazing Spirit as I gave the blessing.
