The idea that material wealth is a sign of divine favor is enticing because it appeals to the natural man. It is effective because it is not without a grain of truth – God does bless with material blessings those who are living righteously. It is destructive because it is so easily reversed where instead of recognizing prosperity as a sign of divine favor it gets twisted into the pursuit of wealth in order to claim divine favor – a reversal from the pursuit of righteousness which then gets blessed with material benefits.
