The fact that Ammaron told Mormon to only take the plates of Nephi suggests to me that he wasn’t expecting Mormon to be the last real historian for the Nephites, just that he would be the next historian. If he has expected that Mormon would be the last he probably would have instructed him to take all the records as Mormon ended up doing anyway.
