Considering the obviously close friendship both before and after their conversion between Alma and the sons of Mosiah it is natural to wonder why Alma was not among those who joined their mission to the Lamanites. The most likely primary reason in my mind if that he was likely in a different state of life than they were. His father was decades older than their father and therefore he was likely older than them by a significant amount. Other possible factors that might have prevented him from joining them – he had almost certainly lived in captivity to the Lamanites with his father in the land of Helam (he was most likely alive at that time) and may have felt it necessary to about those memories.
On a totally different topic: it occurred to me today that Mosiah never saw his sons again after they left on their mission because he died before their return. Likewise the sons of Mosiah never saw Alma as the current judge because he turned the judgement seat over to Nephihah before their returned.
