Hit and run

Tonight we had the memorable experience of having a distracted driver beer into us as we drove the van home from the grocery store. Everyone was in the car (except Isaac, who is at scout camp this week) so we all got a shared experience that will be talked about for a long time.

The man had his phone out in his hand as he came away from us, then instead of pulling over he drove off. We followed him up North County Boulevard and through a couple of neighborhoods before refusing to match his increasing speeds on neighborhood roads. He was clearly trying to avoid facing his mistake. I got a picture of his car while we were following him and we reported it to the police (Case# 19AF04523) even before we gave up on following him. After filling out a police report on the side of a road in Alpine – while the kids were playing at a nearby park – and learning from the police that it was a rental car and that other witnesses also called in to report it, we all came home excited by the experience.

Tomorrow I’ll need to call our insurance agent to figure out how to handle the repairs to the van. Thankfully there’s nothing wrong with the van functionally but the running board on the driver’s side is useless besides plenty of scratches and dents from the full body sideswipe. The Infiniti basically lost its right side mirror and was dented the full length of it’s left side – especially the front quarter panel.
