Laura and I went to our first session of marriage counseling this afternoon. It was interesting to have a name applied to our communication pattern (pursue and withdraw) but even more interesting to listen to Laura’s description of our marriage – which showed no reason why anyone should want to end such a marriage. Sure we have things to deal with but while it is a challenging situation it isn’t toxic or abusive. It was also interesting to watch Laura repeatedly interrupt the therapist – that communication pattern isn’t confined to her interactions with me or the family.
